What is a grinder: what it’s for and why you should use it

Today, the angle grinder remains the most widely used portable electric cutter in the construction industry, an important tool in learning how to tile with ceramics, porcelain, and other materials.

At RUBI, we have expanded the range of CAS products and have included in our catalogue a lightweight, efficient and cordless grinder, the Angle Tech , designed to improve cutting precision, ergonomics and safety for the tiler.

In the following article, we’ll explain what it’s for and how to use it. So, if you want to get the most out of yours or are thinking about buying a grinder, keep reading!

What is a grinder?

A grinder is a common tool in the construction industry, equipped with a high-power motor connected by gears or a coupling to the motor shaft. A blade is then attached to the grinder which spins at a high RPM to cut through materials.

Grinder sizes are strictly proportional to the size of the disc used. Standard sizes are 115 mm, 125 mm, and 230 mm.

What is it for?

Thanks to their great versatility, a grinder can cut a wide variety of materials, such as tiles or metal. It’s important to use the right blade, and this will depend on the material you’re cutting. Like all tools, grinders have their pros and cons:

  • Pros: They are more affordable than other tools for cutting tiles. Additionally, their lightweight and versatile design with a high cutting speed makes it an efficient and practical tool.
  • Cons: Not everyone knows how to properly use a grinder, which can make it dangerous if not handled correctly. In inexperienced hands, the cut quality can be poor, the tool can generate a lot of dust and noise, and in extreme cases can result in serious injuries.

Now we know what is a grinder, we present the newest addition to the RUBI catalogue: the RUBI ANGLE TECH CAS grinder, a new product from the CAS & RUBI Alliance, battery-powered products.

What should we consider when choosing a grinder?

Below, we’ll detail the key aspects to consider when choosing a grinder, so you can get a thorough understanding of the tool. We’ll also explore its features and offer guidelines for safe and effective use.

As with other electric cutters, grinders typically come in different sizespower ratings, and blade diameters. This means we can distinguish two main groups: large volume grinders and mini grinders.

Mini grinders

These are the most recommended for internal tile installation and cutting and machining of other thin-walled materials. They typically have a diameter of 115 mm to 125 mm.

Large volume grinders

Large volume grinders are much larger and heavier than the previous models, typically with a diameter of 230 mm, but we can also find them in 180 mm. They are much more robust and are primarily used for cutting and grinding construction materials, including metals.

In the following video you will discover the features of the RUBI ANGLE TECH grinder.

Selecting a grinder according to the type of work

If you want a grinder for occasional or moderate-frequency work on small surfaces, a mini grinder is usually the best solution, such as the RUBI Angle Tech.

However, if we need to do very frequent and intensive work on large, thick materials, the best option will be a large volume grinder.

The power and larger size of these grinders means they are designed to work longer hours, and we will find it much more comfortable to endure a more intense work routine.

Main features of a grinder

Functions

Typically, mini grinders have a single working speed. Therefore, it’s important to keep in mind that if we want to expand the range of functions (polishing or precision work), we should consider purchasing a grinder with speed control. However, some variable speed grinders do also exist in the market.

Security

The next aspect to consider concerns safety at work and tool control. It’s important that our grinder has a soft start, overcurrent protection, and protection against unintentional start-up.

New RUBI grinder: a commitment to ergonomics and safety at work

With the launch of this new tool, RUBI expands its CAS product portfolio, focusing on safety and ergonomics in the workplace.

Specifically designed for more comfortable and efficient everyday use, its cordless design allows for complete mobility, while the tool-free, adjustable protective cover improves handling and safety.

It also incorporates an electronic safety disconnect that reduces kickback in the event of a disk jam, and an overload protection system that prevents the motor from overheating.

Accessories

Finally, the quality and variety of the grinder’s accessories will also be of significant importance. We must consider additional handles, adjustable blade guards, and the geometry and ergonomics of the main handle.

The ergonomics and geometry of the handle will be a key point, especially in mini grinders, as it will give us better control over the tool while allowing us to work more comfortably.

Remember that when working with standard or mini grinders, you must wear protective eyewear, a mask, and gloves, as well as the appropriate and necessary clothing at all times.

Finally, when working, and especially when cutting a material, there are a number of basic aspects to consider:

  • We’ll always work in a comfortable position, avoiding the cutting line. Ideally, we should position ourselves parallel to the cut.
  • The cutting direction should always be in the same direction as the blade’s rotation. This way, we’ll avoid the so-called “kickback effect” from working against us.
  • Always work with the disc guard securely fastened and oriented so that dust or sparks are directed away from us.
  • It is important to hold the tool firmly with both hands.

With these tips you can confidently choose the right grinder for the work you do, and make sure you’re keeping yourself and others safe at work by following the outlined safety guidelines.
